The rose-red city has faded to grey.
For four years, Royal Jordanian’s Boeing 787-8 (JY-BAH) was the undisputed king of Middle Eastern special liveries. Clad in the "Discover Petra" scheme since 2021, it wasn't just a plane; it was a flying UNESCO site. But while many spotters kept "planning" to catch it on their next trip to Heathrow or New York, the clock finally ran out.
The livery has officially been scrapped, replaced by the airline’s refreshed corporate identity. The sandstone palette is gone, and JY-BAH has returned to the standard fleet look.
The Silent Exit
Special liveries rarely get a "farewell tour." They don't announce their retirement dates. One day an aircraft is the pride of the fleet; the next, it’s behind hangar doors in Amman, and a week later, it emerges in standard greys.
The loss of the Petra livery follows a predictable but ruthless pattern: when an airline refreshes its brand—as Royal Jordanian did with its new Embraer E2s—the special schemes are almost always the first to be neutralized. If you were waiting for an official press release to tell you it was time to head to the airport, you were already too late.
A Lesson in Hesitation
We’ve seen this story before with the Emirates Expo 2020 decals and British Airways’ "Dove" schemes. The aviation world moves fast, and maintenance schedules are indifferent to your portfolio. If you haven't ticked a rare registration off your list, you are permanently at the mercy of the paint shop.
